Gran Canaria

Gran Canaria

Sports & nature

Sports & natureLike most other destinations with mild climates and for which tourism is an important part of the economy, Grand Canary offers myriad choices for sports and activities. One can play nearly any outdoor sport at any time of year. Golf is a particularly popular attraction in Grand Canary, as various national and international tournaments are held at the islands six golf courses, designed by some of the better known golf course architects. See Top 10 Gran Canaria Things to Do Of course, there are also the traditional sea sports, such as scuba diving, deep sea fishing, surfing, etc., as well as more relaxed excursions for the less adventurous tourist. The water temperature varies between 22 degrees C in the summer and 18 degrees C in the winter. Grand Canary natives also still practice many ancestral indigenous sports, such as Canarian wrestling, pole fighting, and the shepherd's leap. These are deeply rooted in tradition and can be fascinating and beautiful to watch. Due to the varied nature of Grand Canary's landscape, even tourists not fond of water sports will find plenty to do. There are hundreds of criss-crossing hiking and biking trails with differing levels of difficulty. While work is currently being done to more clearly mark these trails, it is best to get a guidebook or travel with a local guide when exploring these trails. You can also have a full or half day riding in the mountains on a motorcycle with your own guide. The roads are amazing, the scenery is spectacular and the views are first class. Motorcycle Touring is the best way to see this Island. Gran Canaria is a paradise for hill walking with its inhabited cave villages, lake side walks, spectacular mountain scenery and wonderful flora & fauna especially in the Spring. There are a great variety of hikes on outstanding trails, many of these are off-the-beaten-track and the climate is excellent for trekking. 25 great hikes around Gran Canaria: ‘Don’t leave Gran Canaria without seeing it’ is the definitive Guide for hikers, written by Rambling Roger, resident in Gran Canaria. Sports climbing (or rock climbing) requires a federation license and insurance - information on this can be found at the Canary Island Federation of Mountaineering and Climbing. You can also hire the services of a local company and focus on enjoying the wonders of Gran Canaria.

Nightlife info

Nightlife infoNightlife in Gran Canaria Nightlife in Gran Canaria is lively, noisy and fun. It starts late and goes on all night with most bars opening until 02.00 and discos and clubs usually until 06.00. Very little happens before midnight. Like anywhere else, discos, clubs and bars fall in and out of favour very rapidly, so things may be changed when you come to Gran Canaria. But if you are staying in Las Palmas, the place to go is Plaza de España in the Mesa y Lopéz district, which is always lively until early morning. Here, you will find the old Heineken, where many locals start their evening. Elsewhere there’s Cuasquías, a popular venue for free live music, Nowanda Café Club, recommended for jazz aficionados and the Mojo Club, next to the Auditorio Alfredo Kraus, a good place to take in enthusiastic DJ sets. And even more is going on all along the south coast. It’s impossible to get bored in a place where nobody seems to sleep, except at siesta time that is. There are hundreds of bars, clubs and discos catering for a wide range of tastes, especially in Playa del Inglés, Maspalomas and Meloneras. Just head for the big shopping centres and choose what’s best for you. On your way to the main nightlife areas, you’ll always encounter people on the street handing out flyers and encouraging you to visit their bar/disco/club. In Playa del Inglés look out for the Yumbo (famous for its gay scene), Kasbah (where the young and beautiful meet) and Plaza, and dance along to the latest international music hits. And in July 2010 the infamous Pacha opened its doors in Playa del Inglés. If you prefer a quieter atmosphere and you’d like to try your luck, there are two casinos in Gran Canaria, the Casino Las Palmas situated inside the Hotel Santa Catalina in the city of Las Palmas, and the Gran Canaria Casino, which you’ll find in the Hotel Meliá Tamarindos in San Agustín. And don’t forget Meloneras with its stylish and contemporary bars and cafés. There are plenty of places to chill out and watch the sunset while enjoying your favourite tipple.

Culture and history info

Culture and history infoGran Canaria is a popular port of call, created by people coming in from over a thousand different points. The strange melting pot of aromas and colours seemed to catch the ancient travelers by surprise, here at the last European port of call before taking on the long ocean adventure. Nobody expected quite such a melting pot so far from the main centres of the world. For over five centuries now travelers have been saying “This shouldn’t be here”. But it is. Borderlines make up their own rules. Just go behind the beaches and see for yourself. You will find aboriginal silos on clifftops, a neogothic church in banana plantations, a hidden prehispanic city, a colonial district slap bang in the middle of traffic... Visit Gran Canaria, and discover the strange magic of a place from nowhere.
